What Do You Know About the Abortion Pill?

What-Do-You-Know-About-the-Abortion-Pill
The 2022 Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization was a turning point in the history of abortion in the United States.

While access to abortion has been limited in some states as trigger laws went into immediate effect, availability and promotion of the "abortion pill" (also knows as "medication abortion") has risen drastically since it first became available in the U.S. in 2000.

By 2020, medication abortion accounted for more than half of all abortions obtained in the United States, up from 39% in 2017.1

The "abortion pill" is not available for over-the-counter purchase...yet. Unfortunately, there is a very real and immediate push to change that by eliminating regulations that have been in place since 2000 to ensure patient safety. Changes in 2016, 2020, 2021 have loosened restrictions around reporting of adverse events, dispensing of the drugs, and medical oversight. Most recently, "[i]n January 2023, the FDA lifted restrictions that prevented patients from obtaining medication abortion pills from a retail pharmacy."1

The continued erosion of these safety regulations is intentional - the goal is to make the "abortion pill" easily accessible over-the-counter with absolutely no involvement from a medical provider, regardless of the real and potentially fatal risks to the patient. The first step in fighting this great plague of injustice to preborn babies is to know what the "abortion pill" is and how it's being unethically promoted to women facing a pregnancy decision.
