NC's "Care for Women, Children, and Families Act"

Restrictions on abortion in North Carolina changed overnight as the State Legislature voted to override Governor Cooper's veto of SB20 on May 16, 2023.

According to the NC Family Policy Council, the Care for Women, Children, and Families Act "will save thousands of unborn lives every year and provide resources and support for women and families facing unplanned and crisis pregnancies."

The new law prohibits abortion after 12 weeks, with exceptions of up to 20 weeks for rape or incest, up to 24 weeks for "life-limiting" fetal anomalies, and without limit if a physician determines that the mother's life is in danger due to a medical emergency. Not only does the 46-page bill limit abortion, but it also offers funding provisions to help support mothers and families.
